Ina Raja Memorial Education Trust (IRMET) is a registered charitable organization working in the field of education for the last 27 years with socially and economically disadvantaged children. Born out of a personal tragedy in June 1996, the Trust was formally registered in January 1997. The Trust employs 16 full time teachers and 5 volunteers for about 150 children who come to study at the Trust in three shifts. It also has a nascent library of about 3000 children’s books as well as other means for indoor recreation.

The majority of the children targeted by IRMET are officially enrolled in state run schools, which is the only education option available for the urban poor. The problem associated with the state run schools are numerous and well documented. These schools suffer from a lack of material resources, inept management and largely unmotivated teaching staff. Consequently, they have a large drop-out rate beyond primary school. The primary activity of the Trust is to provide free remedial education to children from extremely poor families so as to reduce their school dropout rate. The Trust helps these children excel at school as well as empower them through theatre, music and art. We also offer daily nutrition and a modest financial assistance to a small number of students depending on their need and potential to do well.
