OUR APPEAL
In the absence of quality services, people with intellectual disability are living a highly impoverished and neglected life and their parents are facing tremendous hardships. There are several reasons for it not only specific to Delhi & NCR but all over India:
● Gross underestimation of the capacities of persons with intellectual disability
● Entire sector is left to be taken care of by NGOs.
● Even if some places have adults in their rolls, they are mostly run like day care centres and not training and employment centres. Lack of statistics and adequate policies on the part of the Govt prevents the field to grow.
Muskaan is a voluntary organization of parents and professionals working to secure necessary education, training, and habilitation services for the intellectually challenged persons. We, at Muskaan, are striving to empower them with comprehensive education, life skills, vocational training, and work/employment opportunities. We strive to secure their basic human rights, provide dignity to their lives, and empower parents and family members through emotional and knowledge support sensitizing them to understanding the development needs of their children.
Muskaan has been able to set up a successful model for the training and habilitation of adults with intellectual disability. Our experience at Muskaan has proved that appropriate schooling, vocational training, and work opportunities greatly helps them in overcoming many limitations and be more self-reliant and productive, which enables them to live a life of self- respect and dignity.
